We all know that sometimes salespeople get a bad rap. People don’t readily trust salespeople. Yes, most salespeople have quotas and work on commission, treating this as a short-term job and not a career. This makes people suspicious of the salesperson’s motives. When the customer is part of their bottom line, it is hard to trust that the salesperson truly has the customer’s best interest at the forefront of their mind.
Here are some characteristics to look for will let you know you have found the salesperson that's right for you:
- One Who Creates a No-Pressure Environment—The decision to purchase a car takes time. It just does. Trustworthy salespeople will let you lead the car buying process—from the test drive to discussions of financing options, because “you know you” and you know what you like and what you can afford. However, there are many moving parts in this process and your salesperson has an in-depth understanding of each phase of the process, and he or she should be able to explain what you can expect from start to finish. If you feel empowered to make the choices that best meet your needs, you’ve probably found a car salesperson you can trust.
- One Who Acknowledges Your Budget—Buying a vehicle is a major purchase, no matter the make, model, or year of the car in question. Any salesperson who deserves your trust understands this and should acknowledge your budget right away and then get to work finding vehicles that check all your boxes while staying within your price range. Make sure you have a specific range in mind and immediately share that with your salesperson.
- One Who Shows Knowledge—The salesperson's knowledge should flow freely from your salesperson. It should not, however, dominate the entire conversation. If you are finding it hard to get a word in the conversation, move on and find someone else. You want to deal with someone who is actively listening to your needs and can talk you through each aspect of the car discovery and buying process. He or she should also happily answer questions you may have.
- One who shows they are in it for the long run - How many times have you visited a dealership just days/weeks later and the faces seem new? Good sales people at well run dealerships do not leave or move chasing the latest "opportunity". Having a salesperson who has proven that they are honest/reliable enough to be able to say in the same place for years and will be there for you, not just now, but for the long run is so hard to find but when you do you will understand just how valuable it is.
At Homer Skelton Ford, we strive to be the exception, not the rule. We want to make sure you select the perfect car for you that fits into your budget. We want you to have as many additional car features as you want and can afford while at the same time remaining true to your bottom line.
